This “Blogging Best Practices” (http://www.echoditto.com/blogging) article offered a very good insight into the mechanics of blogging, its origins, and its relevancy to the internet as a social entity as well as a stepping stone into the vast internet marketplace. Many authors utilize the blogosphere to generate a following to which they could directly market and promote things that they are working on, as well as appearances and functions that they are participating in. An active consumer would be hard pressed to find a main stream author that does not use the blogosphere as at least a segment of their overall marketing strategy; one would also observe the effectiveness that an active blog presence has on reader loyalty and word of mouth promotion. In the list of some of the most celebrated author ran blogs Cory Doctorow’s craphound stands out as a great link to the author’s activities, personal thoughts, and sometimes his political ideologies.

Cory Doctorow was the author of the cult classic, Little Brother, which as the name implies is reminiscent of George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece, 1984. In the novel Doctorow’s protagonist, 17 year old Marcus Yallow, uses his technical expertise to construct custom devices that can hack, evade, and manipulate existing private and government infrastructures. Like any candid look into existing social structures and government practices Little Brother was controversial as it posed the question about the boundaries between personal freedom and homeland security. The book was appropriately marketed almost exclusively online and could be found for free on the author’s website, craphound.com. This free version had little effect on the book’s success as it debuted at number 9 on the New York Times bestseller list in children’s chapter fiction (Craphound).

As a blog Cory Doctorow’s craphound is extremely effective in keeping the readers informed of current and upcoming events and works. The author is effective in keeping in contact with reader comments and creates a sense of community that can be utilized to his advantage. Currently on his blog Doctorow is promoting an upcoming press tour for Little Brother’s sequel, Homeland, which will be starting on February 5th in Seattle, Washington. The main page of the blog also features comprehensive archives and tabs to past works, blogs, and a link to his podcast in which the author often reads selections of his work.

In conclusion based on the main points that a successful blog should fulfill as outlined by echoditto.com, craphound is a huge success.  Doctorow stays current by posting nearly everyday and sometimes several times a day and offers insight into multiple levels of his works and activities. The website is visually appealing and has a wealth of content that can keep a reader engaged for hours. The political nature of some of his work also keeps the discussion interesting and opposing viewpoints are always entertained with a level of respect. Cory Doctorow’s craphound stands out amidst the ocean of author maintained blogs as fresh, entertaining, and innovative.
